A blank page does not have to become a finished project. It can simply be somewhere to put your attention for a few minutes. Try this small ritual when you want to make something but do not know where to begin.

Start with what is already here

Choose one ordinary object within reach: a cup, a leaf, or the corner of a notebook. Leave your phone face down and give yourself one minute to look. Notice a curve, a shadow, or a detail you would usually pass over.

You do not need a new set of supplies. A pencil and the back of a used envelope are enough for this exercise.

Make three small marks

Spend the next two minutes drawing three lines from the object. They might be the rim of your cup, the bend of its handle, and the edge of its shadow. Let them be uneven. The task is to notice and respond, not to make a faithful picture.

If drawing is not what you feel like doing, write three words instead. Try describing the object without naming it: warm, round, familiar.

Leave yourself a beginning

Use your final two minutes to add one thing: a patch of color, a sentence, or another shape. Then write a short invitation at the bottom of the page, such as ‘next time, draw the handle.’

Stop there if you want to. Leaving an obvious next step gives you somewhere to return without having to start from nothing again.

Choose one object. Notice one detail. Make one small beginning.
